There's a lot of advice on careers so much that it can be overwhelming but the reality is that there is one sure way to get promoted.... Your boss is asking only one thing from you and that is to solve his or her problem! Do that consistently over time and you will be rewarded! The reality is that you will never get promoted because the boss thinks your nice or that you might do a good job in a higher position. You get promoted because you did a great job in the job your in!
Sounds simple and it really is, but you have to put in the work. First, you need to really talk to your boss and understand what they see as their problems. Avoid the temptation to hit a home run with your first at bat, go for the smaller problems first put in the effort to find a set of viable solutions and run them by your boss. You may get feedback that you don't want to hear and that only means that you did not think it through enough or your sales pitch to the boss was not convincing enough. Don't worry, go back to the drawing board and rethink your solution. Get input from your peers and your subordinates and let your boss know your working on an alternative. Finally, recognize that you are most likely going to work on a lot of this solution on your "off" hours.
Even the most unfriendly of bosses turn a bit softer is your solving their problems!
